For over 40 years, Mike Maczuga has been one of the most successful club coaches in Arizona. As the founder, manager and Head Coach of the Arizona Marlins Swim Club since 1982, he has had significant success coaching athletes from beginner to senior level. He developed a unique program, utilizing a wide array of technique innovations tailored to the 8 & under beginning swimmers that he teaches as well as implementing a high-intensity, endurance-oriented training program tailored to his Senior and National Team. He has been the driving force behind motivating and inspiring swimmers to reach the highest levels of swimming.
Mike’s swimmers have achieved significant results on both the national and international levels. He coached Pan American Qualifiers, World University Team Qualifiers and 2015 U.S. National Junior Team Member. Further validating his coaching expertise, he produced U.S. Olympic Trial Qualifiers and a Trial Finalist in nearly every Olympic year since the inception of the team (1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016), all of whom were developed as young Marlin swimmers to this elite level.
Nationally, Mike has coached numerous Senior and Junior National competitors. Eight of his swimmers became Junior National Champions. Also under his direction, several swimmers achieved Top 16 National Rankings and a few ranked amongst the top 100 All-Time U.S. Performances. He is credited with guiding the Arizona Marlins to 2 Senior State Titles: the 1990 Arizona Senior Team Championship as well as the 2000 Arizona Senior Girls Team Championship. In addition, Mike’s Marlin swimmers set 45 Arizona State Records.
Mike produced 85High School All Americans and 80 High School State Champions. His mentoring and coaching has led many of the swimmers who spent years training under his tutelage from the beginning level to the senior level to continue their swimming career in college. His swimmers have earned scholarships at some of the most prestigious colleges in the country and have competed at top Division I college swimming programs, including: Stanford (12 athletes, 4 of whom became Team Captains), University of Texas, Northwestern, Michigan, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Duke, University of Arizona, USC and Alabama, amongst others.
In addition to his distinguished coaching career which earned him the ASCA Level Five Coaching Certification, Mike has contributed to Arizona Swimming. In 1982, Mike served as the Arizona Coaches’ Representative to the Arizona Local Swimming Committee and as the Arizona Technical Chairman from 1983 to 1986. He represented the State of Arizona as an All-Star Team Coach in 1982, 1983, and 1984 and as the Western Zone Coach in 1985. In 1986 and 1987, Mike served as the Vice President of the Arizona Coaches Association.
